California

  • Contributions from indiviuals and parishes were made to the Red Cross

  • The children in the diocesse have been active: pen pals with children in Mississippi raised $2,500 in pennies; toys and clothes were sent to preschoool age refugees in Houston; car wash raised $950; 20 Katrina Kids Kits sent to Baton Rouge; cookie sale raised $800; God Squad of Contra Costa plans to work in Mississippi in August 2006, Peter Pan Preschool raised $700; junior high school students collected blankets and quilts for parish in Mississippi
  • A host of congregations have adopted St. Patrick's, Long Beach, Mississipi, as many in the diocese konw the rector there. Large amounts of money have been raised; congregations are committed long-term; they are also sending work teams of youth and adults

Central Florida

  • Numerous parishes are partnering with a parish from the Gulf Coast
  • Many Central Florida parishes have sent cash directly to ERD, others have sent cash directly to local parishes in affected areas
  • There have been donations of equipment (including a van) and people to help loading and unloading-- ie. trucks with supplies
  • Several parishes have sent work crews, mainly to help clean (inside and outside buildings)-- these efforts are coordinated to assure volunteers have adequate sleeping facilities
  • Other volunteers range from professionals to laborers
  • Some have offered to take people into their homes, however due to legal/safety concerns, it has been recommended by Red Cross and EMM it is better to help arrange hotel accommodations instead
  • Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy is accepting student from other Episcopal or independent schools who need refuge--with out requiring tuition they will educate, clothe and house families in need
  • Grace Episcopal Church, Port Orange, indicated interest in partnership
  • One-time work team going to the area in November

  • St. Paul's, Mobile, is working with several churches in the Mobile aera to get supplies into Mississippi
  • St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Mobile, is colecting diapers, baby food, formula, wipes, first aid items, bottled water, powedered milk, canned goods, ramen cup noodles, can openers, cookies, crackers, peanut butter and jelly, and granola bars to be carried by truck for distribution at Gulf Coast Worship Center in Long Beach, Mississippi. These relief trips will be made each day for the next several weeks and there are on-going volunteer opportunities, including going to Mississippi to help unlaod supplies
  • Trinity, Mobile, is collecting supplies, such as food items (children's cereal in particular), cleaning supplies, summer clothing on hangers, hygiene items and medical supplies to be sent to the areas stricken in south Mobile County. They are accepting donations of money as well
  • Holy Cross, Pensacola, is colecting supplies including hygiene products (combs, toothpaste, etc.), cleaning supplies, underwear to take to Mississippi and to evacuees in shelters in Florida. Volunteer opportunities are available
  • St. Christopher's, Pensacola, is collecting items, including bug spray, wipes, waterless soap, sunscree, water, hats, visors, deoderant, formula, frminine products, new underwear, pop-top canned food to be delivered to Mississippi. They are accepting donations of money as well

East Carolina

East Tennessee

  • Upper East Area
  • Episcopal University Ministry – East Tennessee State University students in Johnson City have collected supplies in the coordinated Upper East effort, and its chaplain joined the Upper East Area group who traveled to Covington, La., to distribute supplies.
  • St. Columba, Bristol – donated to Episcopal Relief and Development.
  • St. Thomas, Elizabethton – donated funds to ER-D.
  • St. Mary the Virgin, Erwin – donated funds to help buy gas for a supply truck Erwin-area churches sent to the Gulf Coast.
  • St. John, Johnson City – is coordinating relief efforts in the Upper East area. The church sent a van and trailerload of supplies Sept. 5 to Jackson, Miss., for distribution. Another filled with donations from area churches traveled to Covington, La., Sept. 13. More recently, parishioners have been collecting gift cards, over-the-counter remedies and other goods, and the interim rector was to deliver these to the Gulf Coast during a trip planned also to discuss setting up a sister parish relationship. St. Christopher, Kingsport – may house a displaced priest and family, and the church is hoping to partner with a Mississippi parish to assist in its long-term rebuilding needs. Two parishioners traveled to St. Thomas, Diamondhead, Miss., with a load of blankets and towels in November. St. Paul, Kingsport – is willing to provide housing for a displaced priest and family and has participated in the Upper East collection of supplies. The church is renovating a house on its property to be occupied by a hurricane evacuee who may stay for six months to a year.
  • St. Timothy, Kingsport – is collecting funds for relief efforts.
  • St. Bartholomew, Mountain City – has donated funds to ER-D.
  • Middle East Area
  • St. Raphael, Crossville – collected a special offering Sept. 4. The church prepared to assist 500 evacuees who were said to be heading for Crossville, but when they did not arrive, gathered supplies were forwarded to a distribution center. The church is collecting goods for shipment south, and it may sponsor an evacuated family. Parishioners also are assisting through existing volunteer relationships with relief organizations.
  • St. Elizabeth, Farragut – parishioners are working through the church outreach committee to explore the possibilities of sending a work team to the Gulf Coast in January. The church also is considering partnering with a stricken parish to assist in its rebuilding. Immediately after hurricane Katrina, parishioners worked with the Red Cross at the Knoxville Coliseum, which housed evacuees on a temporary basis. The church has collected donated goods and gathered funds for Episcopal Relief and Development, and it held a special prayer service and Holy Eucharist for hurricane victims.
  • Trinity, Gatlinburg – is collecting items to send to distribution centers. The parish also is investigating ways in which it can assist the dozen families evacuated to the Gatlinburg area; it is collecting items for the Sevier County Food Bank and it continues collecting other donations. Trinity has sent parish outreach monies to Episcopal Relief and Development for hurricane relief.
  • Grace Point Diocesan Camp and Retreat Center – initially hosted three Gulfport, Miss., evacuated families.
  • St. Andrew, Harriman – expected to coordinate a feeding program using ER-D funds for a Roane County relief effort that was to serve some 250 families. The evacuees did not arrive. The church is investigating ways to assist an individual evacuee.
  • Ascension, Knoxville – has raised funds for ERD and has gathered materials to be used in Red Cross “comfort packs,” which include essential items for mothers of infants. It is housing a family in the Harley House who were evacuated from their New Orleans home, and the parish continues to offer them assistance as needed. Episcopal School of Knoxville –registered four evacuated students and raised money for use in relief by the Volunteer Ministry Center, a center for Knoxville-area relief efforts. Students collected diapers and toys for evacuees in the area. Good Samaritan, Knoxville – is working through the Volunteer Ministry Center. The parish filled 70 laundry baskets to create housekeeping “starter kits” for evacuated families. Two families have been adopted into the parish, and church members are supporting their relocation needs.
  • Good Shepherd, Knoxville – has collected funds to send to ER-D and goods to send to relief-effort distribution centers. The church is investigating ways to assist the parish-affiliated Hillcrest Nursing Home, which has taken in several evacuees.
  • St. James, Knoxville – has collected donations and forwarded them to distribution points; collected offerings for ER-D; and is working closely with the Volunteer Ministry Center to assist with evacuee arrival and relocation.
  • St. John Cathedral, Knoxville – is coordinating relief efforts for the Middle East Area of the diocese. Initially offered on its Web site a Katrina page with information including links to relief organizations. The congregation has collected funds for ER-D and the Volunteer Ministry Center, and it has partnered with other church organizations in downtown Knoxville to provide volunteers, transportation, preparation and collection of goods and packages. Many members were trained by the Red Cross in preparation for assisting evacuees. The cathedral has relocated a family and an individual, and it has raised approximately $15,000 from donations by its members. Is considering sending a work team to the Gulf Coast and would support an area- wide work-camp effort.
  • St. Luke, Knoxville –designated September cash offerings for ER-D’s hurricane-relief fund. A parishioner initially worked through the Red Cross to offer church assistance to evacuees who were temporarily housed at the Knoxville Coliseum.
  • St. Thomas, Knoxville – has collected funds for ER-D through Sunday offerings and a Labor Day Dinner. Is investigating opportunities to house evacuated families and has assisted an evacuee in relocating to the area. Members have collected donations – especially cold and flu medications and clothing – and forwarded them to distribution centers, and church volunteers may travel to Hattiesburg, Miss., to assist relief efforts.
  • Resurrection, Loudon – all cash offerings received in September were donated to a relief fund.
  • St. Andrew, Maryville – has collected ERD-designated offerings and has adopt Christ Church in Bay St. Louis, Miss. Launched a parish e-mail group to identify skills and talents, and the church is assisting a parish member who has taken in relatives evacuated from the hurricane-affected area. A group of volunteers traveled to Coast Episcopal School in Long Beach, Miss., Dec. 14-17 to work wherever they were needed and to deliver shoebox gifts, coats and supplies. As of late November, eight parishioners had planned to go on the trip, and an invitation to participate had been extended to parishes across the diocese.
  • All Saints, Morristown – collected items for the homeless New Orleans relatives of a parish family and contributed to the ER-D and Red Cross. The church is a designated Red Cross Shelter, and the vestry had offered it for use as a training center. Parish members have made and donated toiletry kits for evacuees and relief workers. The church is exploring housing options for families relocating nearby; is researching its talents; is exploring opportunities to work in disaster areas; and is developing a long-range strategy.
    Parishioners prepared 15 “flood buckets” (40-50 pound industrial buckets filled with deodorizers, bleach, scouring pads and other cleaning items for families returning to Gulf Coast homes). The church adopted a family and supported them in relocating to the area. Five parishioners traveled to the region with local Baptist groups to aid in tree and debris removal. The church would welcome an area effort to send experienced volunteers to the region after the first of the year.
  • All Saints Day School – enrolled two students from the stricken area.
  • Annunciation, Newport –collected funds for ER-D and has assisted a well-organized relief operation under East Tennessee Baptist Association. The church staged a benefit Gumbo Supper Sept. 24 with Southside Baptist Church, with all proceeds going to the Red Cross.
    St. Francis, Norris –re-used Easter Mite boxes for parishioners to save donations at home and sent collection to the Red Cross.
  • St. Stephen, Oak Ridge – a member coordinated parish disaster relief efforts. The church has sent offerings to ER-D, and it is looking into a partnership with a storm-stricken church. One parish family has taken in evacuated relatives, and the parish is offering assistance. The church held a stewardship dinner called “Pot of Plenty” and sent nearly $3,000 in proceeds to Coast Episcopal School and the parish of St. Patrick, which is worshiping there. New books were gathered and delivered, and a portion of the revenue from the annual church bazaar was to go to hurricane relief funds.
  • Christ, Rugby – has sent donations to the dioceses of Louisiana and Mississippi. The church has a 5-year commitment to ER-D tsunami relief, and the church planned to assist with hurricane relief as it was able.
  • St. Joseph the Carpenter, Sevierville – collected funds for ER-D and collected and distributed funds to 36 families through the Episcopal Peace Fellowship. A parishioner affiliated with Penisula Health is working with evacuees, and the church rector assisted the Red Cross in de-briefing evacuees.
  • Tyson House Lutheran-Episcopal Campus Ministry – students at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville are considering a mission trip to the affected area to assist in rebuilding efforts.
  • South East Area
  • St. Paul, Athens – considered ecumenical effort to assemble baskets for displaced families. Has donated funds to Coordinated Charities, which has assisted evacuees.
  • St. John, Battle Creek – sent all of its disaster relief funds to ER-D.
    Canterbury Episcopal Campus Ministry – students at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga have been involved with campus collection drives, and students planned to contact evacuees enrolled at UTC to assist in making transitions more comfortable.
  • Christ, Chattanooga – collected money for ER-D and funds and goods – especially underwear and socks – for local evacuee use. One parishioner took American Red Cross training for interviewing displaced people. The church planned to send supplies with a parishioner who would return to school at Tulane University in New Orleans. The church may plan a mission trip to the stricken area. The church rector said the church made available Heifer International, ER-D’s “Gifts for Life” and other helping catalogs for parishioners to select alternative Christmas gifts.
  • Grace, Chattanooga – appointed a relief coordinator and solicited local volunteers. A mission trip may be planned.
  • St. Martin, Chattanooga – emptied its food pantry and sent items to the Chattanooga Housing Authority, which is providing housing for the displaced. It maintains a drop-off point for the agency and for Community Kitchen.
  • St. Martin Preschool, Chattanooga – collected specific items ranging from baby food to new children’s underwear. Sent a letter to parents seeking toys, coloring books and magic markers to be given to displaced children.
  • St. Nicholas School, Chattanooga – students filled backpacks with new and gently used school items and toys appropriate for elementary school-aged evacuees.
  • St. Paul, Chattanooga – serves as the South East Area coordinating parish for hurricane relief. The church has partnered with St. Paul, New Orleans, and with St. Peter-by-the-Sea, Gulfport, Miss. through the churchwide program, “We Will Stand with You” Members may plan a mission trip, and they have collected socks and underwear for evacuees. The church has sent approximately $20,000 each to the Louisiana and Mississippi dioceses. In September, the assistant to the rector took a group and a load of supplies to Coast Episcopal School in Mississippi. They stopped in Jackson, Miss., at the center from which relief trucks are dispatched and at Stew Pot Ministries, from which they drove a truck filled with tables, chairs and soft drinks to the coast.
  • St. Peter, Chattanooga – took up a special collection for ER-D and served as a drop-off site for relief goods.
    St. Peter School, Chattanooga – collected clothing and money for relatives of a parishioner who lived in New Orleans and lost everything.
  • St. Thaddaeus, Chattanooga – urged parishioners to contribute money to relief efforts.
  • St. Luke, Cleveland – parishioners and clergy delivered a truckload of supplies to a church on the Gulf Coast. Has collected funds, and EYC members have made packages for the youngsters among local evacuees.
  • St. Mark, Copperhill – offered assistance to local evacuees.
    Nativity, Fort Oglethorpe, Ga. – assisted Community Kitchen in efforts to help evacuees, and has conducted two clothing drives.
  • St. Alban, Hixson – planned to take in up to two displaced families and served as a drop-off point for relief donations. Collected cash donations. The rector, who had served previously in Mississippi, planned to offer his services on the coast.
  • Good Shepherd, Lookout Mountain – The church has raised more than $60,000 as of mid-November in relief donations split between the dioceses of Louisiana and Mississippi. In addition, the 6th- and 7th-grade Sunday school class hosted the Blessing of the Animals in October and raised more than $120 for the ASPCA to help care for and place dislocated pets. Held special meetings to discern gifts, assets and talents, and added a week to its schedule of housing the homeless through the Interfaith Hospitality Network. Has partnered with Grace, New Orleans, through the “We Will Stand with You” churchwide program for hurricane relief.
  • Good Shepherd Preschool – enrolled one displaced youngster and investigated enrolling children of evacuated families living in the South Chattanooga Recreation Center shelter.
  • The Metropolitan Ministry – worked with Chattanooga Area Food Bank to provide food for the displaced.
  • St. Francis of Assisi, Ooltewah – sent funds to ER-D; is assisting a family in Slidell, La..
  • St. Timothy, Signal Mountain – and its preschool have collected canned goods, cleaning supplies and other items to be taken to St. John, Laurel, Miss. The church may send a mission team to Louisiana.
    Christ, South Pittsburg – has donated funds to the Marion County Food Bank for relief efforts and collected supplies including clothing, toiletries, baby food and more. A church couple coordinated parish relief efforts.
  • Thankful Memorial, Chattanooga – the rector visited evacuees at the South Chattanooga Recreation Center shelter, and the church collected contributions for relief work through Episcopal Relief and Development.

  • Volunteer police chaplain Glenn Stone spent 10 days in Houston Astrodome; spent week in Long Beach, Mississippi with a volunteer team from St. Paul's, St. Clair, including nurses with free prescription samples and other medical supplies, who took blood pressure, tested blood sugar and screened people to see the doctor; other memebers of the team unloaded supplies of clothing, personal hygiene products and food from trucks at the distribution center; still others assisted with construction and clean-up of many damaged houses in the area; one member of the team worked in the registration area and logged approximately 370 people who came through requesting assistance; St. Paul's is considering forming a partnership with St. Patrick's, Mississippi -- one of six parishes that lost their building in the hurricane -- who would need assistance over the next several months to few years

  • Several churches are working on a local effort to house law students from Tulane and provide work in local law firms

  • To date, 11 churches congregations and schools have reported collecting a total of $37,527 for ERD -- inlcuding the proceeds from a yard sale at Calvary Church, Knae'ohe and $2000 from the annual fair at Christ Church, Kealakekau. More is being collected
  • St. Andrew's Cathedral, Honolulu, hosted a major fundraiser, organized by the Rev. Honey Becker -- $14,000 was raised and sent to ERD; additionally a Service of Prayer was held at the Cathedral to pray for those affected
  • Church of the Holy Nativity and Day School, Honolulu, are working to establish a direct relationship with an affected parish--they are hoping it will be a church with a day school--$35,000 has been collected to this end ($25,000 from an anonymous donor and $10, 000 from the Thrift Shop) out of this total collected, a $15,000 check is being hand-delivered to East Hancock School in Kiln, Mississipi for school supplies for the students
  • St. Nicholas, Kapolei, O'ahu, is working with EMM to help a family resettle in their community
