“David Henritzy, formerly of this office, suffered a major heart attack last Wednesday, August 7, after being admitted to the hospital with chest pains the previous evening. As most of you know, the initial prognosis for David was very poor, but he had a remarkable turnaround on that Wednesday, is continuing to heal, and his doctors are continually encouraged by his progress.

“I've just finished reading an enlightening article in The New Republic titled "The Principle of Hope" by Sherwin B. Nuland. In it, Dr. Nuland discusses his reactions to a new book "The Case Against Assisted Suicide: For the Right to End-of-Life Care" edited by Kathleen Foley and Herbert Hendin and just published by Johns Hopkins Press.

“I have frequently discussed this same concept with clergy colleagues. “On the Friday before Christmas, I had the opportunity to spend the afternoon with one of my real-life heroes and an icon of the late twentieth century: Dr. Elizabeth Kübler-Ross. Dr. Kübler-Ross, you will recall, wrote the definitional book “On Death and Dying” which dealt with how we respond to these crises in our lives. In the ‘60’s she was a practicing psychiatrist here in New York City and began the then-radical practice of sitting at the bedside of her dying patients and asking them to tell her their stories. ”

“The following article is a reflection by The Rev. Dr. David Henritzy, Director of Healthcare Ministries of our Office. Recently David was elected to the Board of The COMISS Network (Congress on Ministry in Specialized Settings). Courtesy of a resolution of General Convention, the outreach of Healthcare will receive a boost with a larger defined area. The intention after that will be to integrate all parts to be of service to the patient.

“In his on-going effort to expand the role of the Church in ministering to the healthcare needs of the Church's people, Bishop Packard recently lunched with The Rev.
