We were able to send some Christmas packages to deployed chaplains recently. Batches of Christmas cards for the troops, boxes of school supplies and warm clothes for the children at an Iraqi elementary school, and some surprises from St. George's Church at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii are making their way through APO channels to Afghanistan and Iraq. The gift giving is powerful in its simple humility; one accompanying note said, "We are a small church with a very small Church School, please know that we pray for our troops every Sunday." (St. Barnabas, Havana, Illinois.) There are many like that; dear gestures as guidance and light to the manger.”

Often the exceptional environs of our chaplaincies are in contrast to a local congregation so concerned about the perimeter of familiarity.”
